How to Choose a Garage Door Supplier in China: 7 Checks Before You Order
Most "garage door manufacturers" you'll find on Alibaba are trading companies. Nothing wrong with that — unless you're paying factory prices for middleman service. Here's how importers tell the difference.
1. Ask for a live video factory tour
A real garage door factory will walk you through the panel line, foaming station and powder-coating line on a video call within days. A trading company will stall, send stock photos, or offer a "partner factory" visit. This single check filters out most middlemen.
2. Check what they actually make
Ask which parts are produced in-house vs. outsourced. A serious sectional garage door manufacturer roll-forms its own panels and foams them on-site. If everything — panels, springs, hardware — is "from our partners," you're talking to a reseller.
3. Request a real spec sheet, not a brochure
You want: steel thickness (e.g. 0.4–0.5mm skins), foam density, panel thickness (40/50mm), spring cycle ratings, track gauge. Compare our sectional door specifications as a benchmark. Vague answers here mean vague quality later.
4. Verify export experience in your region
Ask for the ports they've shipped to and packing photos from real container loads. Doors bound for Houston need different moisture protection than doors bound for Rotterdam. Experience shows in the details.
5. Test their engineering response
Send a non-standard request — an odd size, a wind-load requirement, a custom RAL color. Factories answer with drawings and lead-time impact. Resellers answer with "let me check with the factory" and disappear for a week.
6. Clarify the QC process in writing
Before you pay a deposit, agree on: pre-shipment inspection criteria, photo/video QC reports, and what happens if a container fails inspection. Get it in the proforma invoice, not in chat messages.
7. Compare total landed cost, not unit price
The cheapest per-door quote often hides thin steel, weak springs and flimsy packing — costs you pay later in warranty claims and damaged freight. Ask for the full breakdown: unit price, packing, FOB charges, and estimated freight.
The bottom line
Choosing a garage door supplier in China is really about choosing a manufacturing partner. Run these seven checks, and you'll avoid the two most expensive mistakes in this business: paying factory prices to a middleman, and discovering quality problems after the container lands.
